Doctors of optometry (optometrist) are independent, primary health care providers, who specialize in the examination, diagnosis, treatment, management, and prevention of diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures, as well as the diagnosis of related systemic conditions. They are licensed to prescribe medications to treat injuries and conditions such as glaucoma and conjunctivitis.
Doctors of optometry receive an undergraduate degree and then complete a four-year program at an accredited college of optometry. Their schooling is similar to that of a dentist or podiatrist. They are licensed by the state and are required to complete continuing education courses.
